New River Ayr DSFB elected at the Triennium meeting

Nethermills Hydro is Operational

Greenock Culvert receives long awaited baffles
in ConservationAfter years of deliberation, there are now baffles installed in the Greenock Culvert under the B743 near Muirkirk. This culvert was a difficult obstacle for salmon and trout as water flumed through it and access was only possible during a very short window of opportunity on a rising and falling water. RADSFB meeting
in ManagementThe next Ayr DSFB meeting will be held on the 27th October. Unfortunately due to Covid, social distancing requirements will mean this is a closed meeting for Board members only. Hopefully the Board will be able to return to open meetings asap but that decision will be taken based on the prevailing Government advice

Severe Pollution on the River Ayr
By now, there are pictures circulating on social media re a serious pollution incident on the River Ayr at Catrine. Ayrshire Rivers Trust were quickly made aware of the problem and were in attendance within 15 minutes of hearing of the developing situation. Nethermills Hydro Update
Contractors faced difficulties when they entered the river to start excavating a pool below where the Archimedes Screw turbine with sit. They has installed a temporary dam made of tonne bags filled with stone however, it soon became obvious that the depths would not allow them to carry on working while keeping the lower fish

Another issue currently threatening the river
in EnvironmentAnother potential problem has arisen on the Ayr with a weir at Carine undermining. It is the weir downstream of the institute adjacent to Ballochmyle Road. We received a message about this earlier today and went for a look as soon as we could. This weir carries a sewer to the Catrine Sewage Treatment works

Hydro Development at Nethermills
Work at Nethermills is underway to build an Archimedes Screw type hydro scheme. This work will continue all summer and autumn but by November should be complete and the new green energy supply operational. However, there’s a lot to be done and fish passage must be maintained throughout the construction period although it is accepted
